Advanced Diagnosis & Treatment of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the tissue lining the uterus (endometrium) grows elsewhere. Approximately one in 10 women in the U.S. suffer from endometriosis during their reproductive years. While there is no cure for the condition, there are treatments that can help ease the pain or address infertility caused by endometriosis. Dr. Ali Guerami is a double board-certified fertility specialist with offices in Frisco and Dallas, TX, dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care. He can help you overcome the challenges presented by endometriosis so you can achieve your dream of parenthood.
Endometriosis & Infertility
For those suffering from endometriosis, the endometrium still behaves as it would inside of the uterus, but it is not able to shed during each menstrual cycle as it should. This causes the tissue to thicken and spread, causing issues such as:
- Development of scar tissue
- Abnormal bonding between tissues and organs
- Tubal damage or blockage
- Ovarian cysts
- Damaged eggs
As a result, endometriosis often leads to infertility.
Symptoms of Endometriosis
Patients with endometriosis commonly suffer from:
- Painful periods
- Heavy menstruation
- Severe abdominal pain
- Intermittent bleeding between periods
- Pain during bowel movements, intercourse, or when urinating
However, some patients are asymptomatic or are misdiagnosed with another condition such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
If Dr. Guerami suspects that you may suffer from endometriosis, he will perform a comprehensive examination using the latest technology to provide the most accurate diagnosis possible. Dr. Guerami will perform a pelvic exam of the cervix, ovaries, and uterus. Ultrasound using a transvaginal probe will also be conducted to gather imaging for a better view of your reproductive organs. In some cases, a laparoscopy is also necessary to allow the doctor to view inside the abdomen to determine where the endometrium is present and the extent of your condition.
Dr. Guerami is a double board-certified fertility specialist dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to help you overcome the challenges presented by endometriosis.
Your Treatment Options
Depending on your goals and the severity of your condition, Dr. Guerami can recommend the best solution for your needs.
Addressing Your Symptoms
If you would like to address the pain caused by endometriosis or are trying to become pregnant, a laparoscopic surgery can be performed to remove the endometrial tissue. In some cases, medications or hormone therapy may also be recommended.
To address infertility caused by endometriosis, Dr. Guerami offers two treatment options:
- If you suffer from mild endometriosis, intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be beneficial to you. During IUI, semen will be placed directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix.
- For patients with mild to moderate endometriosis, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is usually a better treatment option. During IVF, your eggs can be combined with your partner's sperm or a donor's sperm. Once an embryo has developed, it will be placed into your uterus.
Dr. Guerami performs all fertility procedures himself to ensure the highest level of care.
